Kirill Basalaev is a London based contemporary artists working across abstract paintings, sculptures and installations & video art. Was born in 1988 in Tomsk, Siberia (Russia). The artists is exploring memory through the prism of cities and human interaction with the urban environment. His use of construction materials - such as cement, plaster, repair mesh, and enamel - serves to emphasise the connection between his thematic focus and the physical surfaces of the city. In the artist’s recent series of sculptures, despite his continued use of ‘urban’ materials, a context of “nature” has begun to emerge.

‘My sculptures - biomorphic, cement-based, heavy - resemble bodies that might have been born but remained suspended on the border between formation and collapse. They are frozen in a state of mutation: neither human, nor animal, nor object. These are not metaphors, but direct manifestations of experience - forms imprinted into material mass. Their anatomy emerges not from intention, but from collision. Not human, but corporeal. Not naturalistic, but marked by adaptation.’

‘I seek to create a space for reflection on how the body, identity, and trauma intersect with the surrounding world. My work explores these points of contact, revealing how trauma transforms from destruction into experience, and how fear morphs into a form of dialogue. This exploration invites not only a reconsideration of the boundaries between the internal and the external but also a redefinition of their nature: how they intersect, how they crumble, and how something new is created in this process.’
